MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. REGISTER YOUR PLACE FOR OUR RESEARCH TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE SHiFT PROGRAMME?
You are invited to take part in a research project exploring young people’s experiences after completing the SHiFT programme. The research wants to understand what has helped young people after their involvement with SHiFT and what helps to make a difference.

SHiFT wants to know if the support they offer has made a difference, so they have asked a research team to help us find out.
Dr Samantha Burns
Dr Samantha Burns is a researcher who looks into youth justice, safeguarding, and child-centred practice.
She wants to centre the voices and experiences of young people.
Dr Kate Westwood
Kate is a researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has been working with children in alternative provision schools, the youth justice system, and community projects for 15 years, both as a researcher and practitioner
She wants to understand the ways we can all work together to understand our communities better to create change.
ABOUT
-
You have been invited because your ideas are really important and could help other young people. You have either said to SHiFT before that we can contact you, or your SHiFT Guide has asked you if you want to be involved.
Researchers will only get in touch when you’ve said its okay.
-
No. It is your choice.
You can say no
You can stop at any time
It will not affect your support
-
If you decide to take part, there are lots of different things you can get involved in. This might include:
Taking part in a workshop with some creative activities
Talking directly to one of the researchers in about your experiences (known as an interview)
Completing a short survey about how things have been since finishing the SHiFT programme.
We will explain each part of the research and you can decide what you would like to do. For the workshop, you can also choose how much you take part in the activities. You do not have to make artwork or speak in front of others if you don’t want to.
The activities in the workshop include different ways to help you share your experiences and create some artwork supported by an experienced artist. You do not need to have done anything like this before.
-
You will receive:
1. a £30 shopping voucher for coming to the workshop
2. a £20 shopping voucher for doing an interview
3. a £10 shopping voucher for completing the survey
-
Some questions may feel personal or emotional. You do not have to answer anything you do not want to, and you can stop the interview or survey at any time.
Everything you tell us will be treated as private and only used for this research; however, if you tell us something that makes us think that you or another person is at risk of serious harm, we may need to share this information with other people to help keep everyone safe.
If this happens, we will let you know, unless it isn’t safe to.
If you need support, please speak to a trusted adult, SHiFT Guide, or support worker. If you don’t have anyone like this, please speak to us and we can help you find the right support.
-
You can:
Share your experiences and views
Reflect on your own journey that makes sense to you
Help improve services for young people
Help people understand what kind of support makes a difference
Just to remind you that you will be given vouchers for your involvement in each activity
-
You will be asked if you agree to take part. If needed, your parent/carer/guide can also give permission
MY INFORMATION AND DATA
-
Depending on which parts of the research you take part in, we will collect:
your views and experiences shared during interviews or workshops
creative work produced during workshops
your answers to a short survey
information already collected by SHiFT from when you started the programme
To help us understand changes over time, we may also link your survey with information already collected by SHiFT. We will only do this using information that you have agreed we can use.
-
To understand how young people's experiences change over time, we will compare information collected during this project with information already collected by SHiFT (for example information collected when you first joined SHiFT).
If you complete the survey, we will ask for your date of birth and initials. These will only be used by the research team to match your survey with your existing SHiFT information.
Once this has been done, your initials and date of birth will be removed and replaced with a number before anyone sees it.
-
Your information will be used to help understand if SHiFT is making a difference to people. What we learn from this research will help improve support for young people, and might change rules on how we do things.
Once your intitials and date of birth have been removed, it may no longer be possible to tell which information belongs to you. At this point, it might be very difficult to remove your information or ideas from the research.
-
Only information which can’t be linked to you will be used in reports, presentations, or things available to the public. This means your name and identifying details will be removed so that people cannot tell what you have said.
-
Data will be stored for up to 10 years, then deleted.
-
The way we look after your information is ruled by UK law. Under UK law, we need to have a very good reason for using your information (this is called a ‘lawful basis’). Sometimes, we might also want to use sensitive information about you, like information about your health, religion and ethnic background. This is called ‘special category information’. We collect all this information from you to help with our research, which aims to help everyone (this means that it is in the ‘public interest’).
You have the right to make choices about your information under UK law. If you have any questions or would like to ask us to do something with your information, you can ask the researcher or a parent or guardian, or someone else at the University. Contact details are shown at the bottom of this document.
You can stop being a part of the study at any time, without giving a reason. You can ask us to delete your data at any time, but it might not always be possible. If you ask us to delete information before the recording is turned in to text, we will make sure your information is deleted. If you ask us to delete data after this point, we might not be able to. If your data is anonymised (where we take out your name and any other information that lets us know the information is about you), we will not be able to delete it, because we will not know which data is yours.
-
The findings will be turned into a report which will be shared with people to improve future support, services, and practice. We will put what we learn into a flyer that we can share with you, if you want.
