Local MP and Councillor visit Welling Youth Centre to see SHiFT in action: a systems change partnership breaking the destructive cycle of crime

Louie French MP and Councillor Christopher Taylor (Lead Member for Children and Families) visited the Welling Youth Centre this week to learn more about the pioneering work of SHiFT Bexley and its integrated approach to supporting vulnerable young people caught up in, or at risk of, cycles of crime.

They were joined by Stephen Kitchman (Director of Children’s Services) for a tour of the Welling Youth Centre and a discussion with practitioners – SHiFT Guides and SHiFT Social Workers – delivering the SHiFT programme and working alongside around 50 of the most vulnerable children and young people in the borough. The visit highlighted the partnership’s model of intensive, consistent, relationship-based support for children and young people who are caught in cycles of crime and exploitation.

Attendees heard the story of a young person currently working alongside a SHiFT Guide, illustrating how long-term relational practice can support progress across complex areas including family relationships, experiences of sexual and criminal exploitation, and racial inequality. The team talked about how they are putting a systemic relational approach to working with young people into practice, including at times and ways that also meet statutory Children’s Social Care responsibilities.

The Welling Youth Centre is increasingly serving as a vibrant hub for this joined-up work across social care, youth justice, and targeted youth support work. The centre provides a shared base for direct work with children and collaboration across services to strengthen local responses for all young people, including those most at risk of harm.

The model reflects many of the ambitions underpinning the development of Young Futures Hubs, demonstrating how integrated local partnerships can deliver coordinated, relationship-led support for young people and their families.

The visit provided an opportunity to celebrate the progress of the SHiFT Bexley partnership and the difference that is being made together to break the destructive cycle of crime.
